Our Story
loha friends, ʻohana, and partners in impact. Join us in bringing Wishful Thinking to life. A powerful Maui based narrative that transforms profound grief into a celebration of unwavering aloha and heroic community spirit.
Inspired by Maui’s darkest hours, this film shares the real-life loss of Alfie, a dear friend of Lahaina and our writer/director, Kim Mi Ly. Yet, in our story, Alfie survives. This fictional “what if” journey offers a powerful way to process loss, while profoundly honoring the countless unsung heroes who selflessly stepped up to support those in need. Our protagonist, Kailea, embodies this spirit, undertaking a perilous journey across the Molokaʻi Channel to reach her elderly friend. A testament to the enduring bonds of human connection.
Cultural Impact & Community Empowerment:
Wishful Thinking is a profound love letter to Lahaina. Our commitment extends beyond storytelling: we actively uplift the community by prioritizing local crew, collaborating with Hawaiʻi-based actors and non-actors, and featuring real community heroes like those from the S-Turns support hub. This ensures the narrative authentically reflects and empowers the voices of those it honors, championing the exceptional individuals who gave their all to support those who lost everything.

Synopsis
The catastrophic Maui fires send a wave of panic through Kailea, a Hawai’i local in her thirties. Her mind immediately fixated on Lahaina, and her dear friend, eighty-four-year-old Alfie. She and the Scottish man had formed an unexpected and deep bond years ago on the road to Hana, a friendship that took root because Kailea, in some profound way, reminded him of his late daughter.
As fires block routes, Kailea’s determination mirrors the incredible resolve seen across the Hawai’i community. Faced with unprecedented obstacles, she and boyfriend Noa, take to the sea, sailing to Maui. A journey reflecting the courageous, unconventional paths many took to reach those in need before formal aid arrived.
Her frantic search culminates in profound relief and an emotional embrace at the S-Turns survivor support hub. This reunion, amidst unimaginable loss, symbolizes the strength of their bond and the unwavering power of hope, mirroring countless stories of community members supporting each other. This film celebrates that resilience, honors those who stepped forward selflessly, and serves as a powerful reminder of what we achieve together with aloha.
